Concrete Patio vs. Wood Deck: Which Should You Build?

Concrete Patio vs. Wood Deck: Which Should You Build?

When you're ready to upgrade your backyard, it usually comes down to two options: pour a concrete patio or build a wood deck. Both add real, usable outdoor space — but they behave very differently over time. Here's how they stack up.

Cost

Square foot for square foot, a basic concrete patio is often cheaper to install than a raised wood deck, especially on flat ground. Decks get more expensive as they get taller or need to work around a sloped yard. That said, decorative concrete finishes can close the gap quickly.

Maintenance

This is where concrete pulls ahead. A properly poured patio needs very little — an occasional clean and a reseal every few years. A wood deck needs staining or sealing every two to three years to stand up to Arkansas weather, plus the odd board replacement.

Lifespan

Concrete generally outlasts wood. A well-poured patio can last decades with minimal attention, while a wood deck typically runs 15 to 25 years depending on upkeep. Concrete can crack over time, but those cracks are usually repairable rather than a reason to start over.

Looks and feel

Decks have a warm, natural look and work well for raised spaces or yards with a slope — you can build up and out. Patios sit at ground level and pair nicely with fire pits, outdoor kitchens, and seating areas. Plenty of homeowners around Little Rock actually combine the two: a deck off the back door stepping down to a concrete patio.

The bottom line

Choose concrete if you want low maintenance and long life on level ground. Choose a deck if your yard is sloped, you want a raised space, or you love the look of real wood. And if you can't decide — a combination of both is often the best use of a backyard.
