A new fence is one of the best upgrades you can make to a home — it adds privacy, security, and curb appeal all at once. But the first big decision is the material: wood or vinyl? Both are solid choices, and the right one comes down to your budget, how much maintenance you're willing to do, and the look you're after.
The case for wood
Wood is the classic choice for a reason. It looks natural, it's easy to customize, and it works with just about any style of home — from a traditional picket fence out front to a tall privacy fence in the backyard. Around Little Rock, pressure-treated pine and cedar are the most common picks.
The biggest advantage is upfront cost. Wood is usually cheaper to install than vinyl, which makes it the go-to when you're fencing a large yard on a budget. It's also easy to repair — if a board or a post gets damaged, you swap out that piece instead of a whole section.
The trade-off with wood: maintenance
Arkansas weather is hard on wood. Hot, humid summers and wet winters mean a wood fence needs upkeep to last. Plan on staining or sealing every two to three years to protect against rot, warping, and insects.
- Seal or stain every 2–3 years
- Watch for leaning posts after heavy rain
- Replace damaged boards before rot spreads
The case for vinyl
Vinyl (PVC) fencing costs more upfront, but it asks almost nothing of you afterward. It won't rot, warp, or attract termites, and it never needs paint or stain. A quick rinse with a hose is usually all the cleaning it needs.
Vinyl also holds its color and finish for years, which makes it popular for front-yard fences where looks matter most. The downside, besides price, is that a damaged panel usually has to be replaced rather than patched.
So which should you choose?
If you want the lowest upfront cost, a natural look, and you don't mind occasional upkeep, wood is hard to beat. If you'd rather pay more now and forget about maintenance for years, vinyl earns its keep over time.
There's no universally "right" answer — it comes down to your yard, your budget, and how hands-on you want to be. If you're weighing the two, we're happy to walk your property and talk through what makes sense.
