5 Signs Your Fence Needs Repair Before Summer

5 Signs Your Fence Needs Repair Before Summer

A fence does its job quietly until one day it doesn't. Catching problems early is the difference between a quick repair and replacing a whole section. Before summer hits, walk your fence line and look for these five warning signs.

1. Leaning or wobbly posts

Posts are what hold everything up, so they're the first thing to check. Give a few a firm push — if they move, shift, or lean, the post base is likely rotting or the concrete footing has loosened. Left alone, one bad post drags the panels around it down with it.

2. Loose, cracked, or missing boards

Individual boards take the brunt of wind, rain, and sun. A few loose or split boards are an easy fix now, but gaps let moisture into the structure and invite bigger problems. Replace them before they spread.

3. Rot, soft spots, or discoloration

Press on the wood near the ground and at the joints. If it feels soft or spongy, or you see dark, damp-looking patches, that's rot — and rot doesn't stop on its own. Catching it early can save the rest of the fence.

4. Rust and failing hardware

Hinges, latches, brackets, and nails all wear out. A sagging gate that scrapes the ground or won't latch usually points to worn hardware rather than the gate itself — often a fast, inexpensive fix.

5. The fence is leaning overall

Stand at one end and sight down the line. A fence that's clearly leaning or bowing in places has a structural issue building underneath — usually the posts or footings. Addressing it now is far cheaper than a full rebuild later.

None of these mean you automatically need a brand-new fence. Most are simple repairs if you catch them early — which is exactly why a spring walk-around pays off.
