How Long Does a Wood Deck Last in Arkansas?

How Long Does a Wood Deck Last in Arkansas?

A well-built wood deck is one of the best ways to add usable living space to your home. But Arkansas heat and humidity are tough on wood, and a deck won't last forever. Here's what actually determines how long yours will hold up — and how to get the most years out of it.

The short answer

A pressure-treated wood deck in Arkansas typically lasts 15 to 25 years with proper care. Cedar and other softwoods tend to land on the shorter end, while well-maintained pressure-treated lumber can push past 20. Hardwoods and composite decking last longer, but cost more upfront.

What shortens a deck's life here

Central Arkansas gives wood a workout — long humid summers, sudden downpours, and temperature swings that make boards expand and contract. The most common culprits behind early deck failure are:

  • Moisture trapped against the frame, leading to rot
  • Sun exposure that dries and cracks the surface
  • Skipped sealing, so water soaks straight into the wood
  • Poor drainage or ground contact at the posts

How to get more years out of it

Most of a deck's lifespan comes down to maintenance. Seal or stain it every couple of years, keep the surface clear of standing water and leaves, and deal with small problems before they spread. A loose board or a popped nail is a five-minute fix; ignored, it becomes a structural one.

Repair or replace?

If the framing and posts are still solid and only the surface boards are worn, you can often refinish or re-board the deck and add years to its life for a fraction of the cost. But if the support structure is rotting, posts are moving, or the deck feels unstable underfoot, replacement is the safer call.
